EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER THREE
Bright and early this morning, I get a call from Tawny, my
office assistant, and she’s rattling like a lunatic into the phone.
I’m still trying to get a few winks in, but between her high-pitched
squealing and Keith’s ever-present a.m. hard-on pressing me in the
center of my lower spine, I know the prospect of going back to sleep
is null and void.
The movement of my reaching over for my ringing cell phone
was enough to rouse my husband and his anatomy, so even if I did
manage to get off the phone, Keith would want to try to get in a
quickie before I had to go in and check on our little girl.
Tawny was beside herself this morning, so I pushed the covers
off of me and took the phone to the bathroom where I turned on the
shower faucet and take my morning piss.
“OK, Tawny, calm down. What’s the deal?”
“Ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod! You’ve got to let me work on
this assignment with you.”
“What assignment and what would you be doing?”
“I will do anything you want me to do. I’ll run and get
bagels, I’ll carry all of your equipment, all of your design boards, I
will even baby sit
Savannah on site when
Ms. Ramona can’t keep her. Ohmigod! This is so exciting!”
“What is exciting?”
I wiped myself, stood and flushed the toilet. Just then,
Keith came shuffling in the bathroom, buck naked, sporting his au
natural morning woody and went to stand in front of the toilet. I
guess he had to pee, too.
“Don’t miss, Keith. Control your pole. I hate having to mop
just because you can’t aim.”
“Miss Cheyenne. You have to promise me I can work on your
new project. Please. I’d work a week for free.”
“Okay, now I really have to pay attention to what the hell
you’re talking about. What has got you all out of sorts? I don’t
have any exciting new projects that would have you acting this
retarded.”
“You do now. I got a call this morning on the cell to
schedule an appointment for you to do Duane Jackson’s new house.
Ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod!!”
“Duane Jackson? That name doesn’t ring any bells. Who is
he, a family member you haven’t seen in ages?”
“No, even better. Duane Jackson is none other than the
hottest rapper on the scene right now. He’s hotter than Nelly, TI,
Jay-Z, Luda,
and all the rest of them rolled into one. His street name is DJ
N-Sane.”
“No kidding?”
“No kidding, boss. Wait, you said that like you don’t even
know who he is.”
“I rarely listen to such music, Tawny, you know that.
Sometimes, it makes my head hurt. I liked 2Pac, though. He was the
shit.”
“Well, DJ N-Sane sounds a little like him. He’s got real
flows that ain’t just about the street it is also about love, and
relationships, and good, hot sex.”
“Uh-huh…and what song is out on the radio right now by him?”
“His new album just dropped two weeks ago. It’s already sold
like twenty or thirty million copies. His newest single from the
album is ‘Bitches in My Ride’. It’s jammin’.”
“Bitches…in my ride? That’s jammin’?”
“Yeah, I’ll let you hear it when you get in the office. I
bought his album the minute it went on the market. He’s got a love
rap on there called, ‘Puttin’ It on You’.”
“Let me get off this phone before I vomit. If you think that
sounds like a love anthem, I think you are sillier than I thought you
were when you woke me up screaming in the phone at eight-fifteen on a
Saturday morning.”
“I’m sorry I woke you and Mr. Lewis. I’ll see you when you
get in the office.”
“Okay, Tawny, but thanks for the message, nonetheless. You
can call his people or whomever back and let them know I will
come check out to the house later this afternoon.”
“Will do. See ya.”
“Goodbye.”
Keith had taken a shower in my running water and was drying
off as I hung up.
“What was that all about?”
“I pushed him aside and stepped under the water spray. The
refreshing blast of cool water helped wake me the rest of the way and
as I wet my hair, I responded, “That was about my psychotic assistant
and her ridiculous crush on this little man-boy rapper who has
contacted my agency to design his new home.”
“What’s his name?”
“Duane Jackson. She said his rapper name or whatever is DJ
N-Sane or something.”
“Oh, yeah, I know of him. He’s got a little game on him.
He’s good.”
“You listen to that shit?”
“Yeah, baby…when I’m with my boys and we’re hanging out.
What, you thought we’d just sit around and listen to Chopin?”
“No, but maybe not something from an album called ‘Bitches in
My Ride’.”
“I don’t have that one, yet, but maybe I can get Tawny to
burn me a copy.” He laughed.
